The Scantic River Watershed Association is happy to announce the 28th Annual Scantic Spring Splash Canoe and Kayak Race to benefit the Enfield Food Shelf will take place Saturday March 30st 2019.
There will also be the annual fund raising event on Tuesday, March 26th at the Powder Hollow Brewery in Enfield, CT starting at 6:00 PM. For a $20.00 donation contributors will receive a token for one of the many locally brewed beers and will be able indulge in a buffet dinner. Videos and pictures of past races will be featured along with various raffles.
This is going to be a very special race as this is the second year the race will be held without having to portage around the Springborn Dam. Racers and paddlers are rejoicing again at the thought of running the whole race course without the mandatory portage at the dam. They are not going to miss having to portage up the dreaded Heart Attack Hill. The CT DEEP did a wonderful job of removing the dam last year which opened up that part of the river to the paddlers. By removing the dam it has created at least 5 more new rapids or quick water for the paddlers to challenge themselves.
Because of the removal of the dam there is no good area to finish the novice race. The Race Committee has decided that there will no novice race this year. Only the longer race for the more experienced paddlers will be held.
This year’s sponsors of the race are Powder Hollow Brewery, Camerota Truck Parts, Carrollton Properties, Smyth Bus Company, Bills Landscaping and Lil’ Buddy’s Mini Mart of Enfield.
Registration is held from 9:00 to 11:00 A.M. at the Powder Mill Barn on South Maple Street in Enfield, CT. The registration fee is $25.00 per participant (any paddler). The race Committee is again supporting the Enfield Food Shelf by collecting donations of non-perishable food items. The Theme again this year isBe a Fan Donate a Can.
The start for all racers is at Quality Avenue in Somers, CT. Volunteers restrict parking so plan on a quick boat drop and then drive your car to the end-destination of your race. A free bus shuttle offered by Smyth Bus Company will bring you back to the start and finish locations. All Race Classes will start promptly at 12:00 P.M. Don’t miss the start time! Please note that will be no Novice Classes offered this year.
Before, during and after the race hot & cold food and snacks will be provided by the Scantic River Watershed Association for a nominal fee in the Powder Mill Barn. The South Maple Street Bridge will be closed to all traffic during the event.
Spectators wishing to watch the race from the South Maple Street Bridge area are encouraged to park at the Fermi High School teacher’s parking lot at the corner of Moody Road and North Maple St. and take a free shuttle bus provided by Smyth Bus Company. The shuttle bus will begin picking up spectators at Fermi at approximately 11:30 am. Both buses will provide transportation from the barn to the Fermi Lot after the race is over.
Keep in mind the safety rules: all participants in the Expert Class race (Quality Ave. to S. Maple St.) will be required to wear safety helmets. All racers must wear approved over the shoulder PFD. All racers, must also wear a safety helmet regardless of the race they participate in. All participants are encouraged to wear wet suits due to the cold water. Rentals can be reserved for the day of the race from Enfield Scuba & Water Sports at 860-745-7282.
